Our Story

The Global Energy Resilience Training & Mitigation Foundation was established from a shared belief that first responder education must evolve alongside emerging technologies. As lithium-ion batteries, electric vehicles, renewable energy systems, and advanced energy storage become increasingly common, fire departments everywhere face new operational challenges that require updated knowledge and specialized training.

Recognizing this growing need, Specialty Fire Solutions and Solar And Fire Education (S.A.F.E.) joined their expertise to establish an independent nonprofit organization dedicated entirely to firefighter education, operational readiness, and community resilience.

Today, the Foundation serves as a collaborative resource where educators, researchers, fire service professionals, public safety professionals, industry experts, and public agencies work together to improve firefighter safety through practical, evidence-based learning.

Our Team

Chief Eddie Sell | President | Founder

Chief Eddie Sell has spent more than 35 years in California’s fire service, having worked for CAL FIRE, the City of Long Beach Fire Department, and recently as the Fire Chief for Hemet Fire Department in Southern California. Chief Sell remains an active advocate for fire service workers across the nation, and volunteers as the president of a large fire service trade association. Chief Sell holds a Master’s Degree in Emergency Management, a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, he’s a Certified Chief Fire Officer, an EMT-P, and is on the board of directors for FIRESCOPE.

Dr. Reggie Freeman | Vice President

Dr. Reginald (Reggie) Freeman is an internationally recognized executive leader with more than 25 years of experience in public safety, emergency management, and organizational leadership. As Vice President of the Global Energy Resilience Training & Mitigation Foundation (GERTMF), he brings strategic expertise in resilience, innovation, and evidence-based public safety. Dr. Freeman also currently serves as the Fire Chief for the Minneapolis Fire Department, as an Adjunct Professor, and contributes to NASA-funded wildfire resilience research with Oklahoma State University, advancing data-driven approaches that strengthen emergency preparedness and community resilience.

Captain Kelly Becker | Operations Director

Captain Kelly Becker spent 30 years with CAL FIRE/Riverside County, retiring as a Captain in 2025. Midway through his career he transitioned into law enforcement, graduated POST in 2017, and spent eight years as a sworn arson and fire investigator. He holds a Certified Fire Investigator designation through the International Association of Arson Investigators and has personally investigated more than 1,200 fires, many involving lithium-ion batteries. At GERTMF, he builds the training programs, SOPs, and operational protocols the company delivers to fire agencies and industry clients. His time as an investigator shaped how he approaches suppression: he knows how these fires start, which is a different kind of knowledge than knowing how to fight them.

Chief Jason Hosea | Energy Education and Compliance Director

Chief Jason Hosea brings more than 30 years of fire service leadership and over two decades dedicated to training and education to his role of Energy Education & Compliance Director for the Global Energy Resilience Training & Mitigation Foundation. He provides strategic expertise in emergency management, organizational leadership, and workforce development. Jason is passionate about advancing operational readiness through education, collaboration, and evidence-based practices that strengthen the fire service and the communities it protects.

Kimberly Reeder | Secretary Treasurer

Kimberly Reeder has managed complex financial operations for 18 years across city and county government, higher education, nonprofit public health, and public safety organizations. She has overseen budgets totaling more than $4.3 billion and has helped more than 30 volunteer fire departments navigate the reimbursement process for PPE, physicals, and training. She holds a BS from UC Riverside and an MBA from the University of Redlands. As CFO of the Global Energy Resilience Training & Mitigation Foundation, she handles financial strategy, grants administration, auditing, and compliance. Her public-sector background means she understands how fire agencies actually procure, which matters in a company selling directly into that market.
